This book consists of twelve carefully interwoven articles written by leading space scientists who summarize our state of knowledge of the physics of the magnetosphere surrounding the planet Jupiter. Ground-based data as well as information from the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft are used in developing both physical descriptions and theoretical 3/5(1). Magnetic field reconnection in the tail of the magnetosphere and powerful plasma-wave interactions within the magnetosphere are two of the processes that energize radiation-belt particles. Geomagnetic storms—often caused by coronal mass ejections in the solar wind striking the magnetosphere—trigger these mechanisms, sometimes supercharging.

Physics of the Magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. Hosted by Tom Krimigis (Johns Hopkins University – Applied Physics Laboratory) Houston, Texas. Physics of the Jovian Magnetosphere – The Book came out of this conference. Hosted by Alex Dessler (Rice University) Lindau, Federal Republic of Germany. Nobel Symposium No. 30 on the Physics of the Hot Plasma in the Magnetosphere was held at Kiruna Geophysical Institute, Kiruna, Sweden from April , Some 40 leading experts from America, USSR, and Western Europe attended the Symposium. The purpose of the meeting was to . magnetosphere and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. The second part of the book presents a more rigorous theoretical foundation of space plasma physics, yet still contains many applications to.
